Frequently asked Questions about our Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

Why would I need a Memory foam mattress topper? A memory foam mattress topper is an excellent way to "fine tune" your existing bed to a new level of comfort, especially if your existing bed is too firm. If your bed is too firm and yet gives good support (the proverbial "nice firm bed) then an appropriate mattress topper will probably make it just right. top of page

Isn't a "nice firm bed" what you need? Yes, and no, you need a bed which is firm enough to be supportive so that you sleep with proper spinal alignment. However, a bed that is too hard will never be comfortable to most people because the resulting pressure points will cause you to toss and turn and experience pain, numbness, and tingling. Your great Grandparents thought that a "nice firm bed" was a big improvement over the sack full of cotton or feathers that they were used to, and it was. top of page

How do you know if your bed is too firm? Do you toss and turn? Is it hard for you to go to sleep even when you're tired? Do you ever wake up with numbness or tingling especially in your arms or shoulders? Do you experience pressure points? If you answered yes to any of these questions, your bed is probably too firm. top of page

How about if your bed is too soft? Will a memory foam mattress topper help then? No, it won't, in that case it may even aggravate the condition. However, all may not be lost. If your bed is too soft, look here.

Why not just get a cheaper foam pad from a discount store? Won't that work also? One of those might help a very small amount. But, not nearly as well as a high quality Memory foam topper. First of all discount store foam pads (usually "egg crate" foam) is very low density, which means you are buying mostly air. When you get an Advanced Concept Memory foam mattress topper, you will be amazed at how heavy it is (a direct indication of their quality and pounds density). Because of this fact, these cheap foam pads will bottom out and you will still experience pressure points and all of the associated discomfort. And to heap insult upon injury, those things wear out, and become lumpy and misshapen in no time. They are a complete waste of money. And if you can get your hands on a good quality urethane foam (not memory foam) topper it just isn't the same. Regular foam is always a compromise between support and cushioning. It just can't do both like memory foam can. top of page

What thickness of topper should I get? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you toss and turn?
  • Is it hard for you to go to sleep even when you are tired?
  • Do you ever wake up with numbness or tingling especially in your arms or shoulders?
  • Do you experience pressure points?

If you answered yes to only one or two of these questions, or if you experience these conditions only occasionally then your bed is just a little bit too firm. You might like a 1" latex pincore Mattress Topper, which is similar to memory foam, but made of latex foam rubber.

If you answered yes to most or all of these questions, or if you experience these symptoms most of the time, then your bed is certainly too firm. In this case, a 2" thick flat memory foam topper is probably what you need to reduce pressure points and allow you to sleep like a baby. In fact, a 2" topper is the safe bet in most cases, and will be very comfortable for most people.

If you answered yes to all of these questions, or if you have serious back or joint pain caused by fibromyalgia or arthritis then you might want a 3-inch thick or even a 4-inch thick topper. A very thick memory foam topper like this will provide serious levels of cushioning for anyone without sacrificing support like a regular foam cushion of these dimensions would. However, with a 3" thick memory foam topper you may feel a little bit like you are laying down in a fitted compartment, which may still be comfortable, but different than what you are probably used to. If you do not have this kind of health problem then a 3" topper may seem like a little bit "too much". With a 4" thick memory foam topper, this feeling will be even more exaggerated, but if you have these kinds of health problems then one of these products will probably be a great comfort anyway. top of page
