Memory Foam Density
Why does the density of the memory foam matter? Foam density refers to the weight of a cubic foot of foam. The higher the density of the foam, the more supportive it is. Also, higher density foam conforms to your body better, and recovers its shape more slowy.
"Pounds" refers
to the density of the memory foam. A cube of foam that is 12 inches
on each side and weighs 3 pounds has a density of three pounds
per cubic foot.
What this means to you is that a higher density topper has more
material in it and feels a little firmer. It also means that a
higher density topper is not as likely to fully compress or "bottom
out".
What is the ideal foam
density? What do you recommend?
The ideal density of memory foam depends on the
application and your personal preference. However, if you are going
to use your topper on a bed to make it more comfortable, the best
choice is probably either a 2 or 3 inch topper in a 4lb.
density. 2" 4lb.
toppers are very popular and they work very well for this (if you
are healthy, 2" 4lb. topper is my recommendation).
On the other end of the spectrum is this; if you have serious
back or joint pain caused by arthritis, fibromyalgia, or injury
then your Doctor might recommend that you get a 4" 5lb. topper
because it gives the most cradling, form fitting support that is
available. Most healthy people won't be comfortable sleeping in
a 4" thick form fitting support cradle, but if you have one
of these health problems it can be a real blessing that will allow
you to rest with much less pain.
All of the in between thicknesses and densities are available
to deal with the varying degrees of cushioning and support that
people might want or need.
